A psychological thriller with more twists than Italy’s Stelvio Pass, Behind Her Eyes is Netflix’s latest lockdown-binge hit, with some incredible filming locations. Based on the bestseller by Sarah Pinborough, it stars Tom Bateman, recently seen in Beecham House and Vanity Fair, as brooding psychiatrist David and Eve Hewson, from 2018’s Robin Hood and BBC series The Luminaries, as his mysterious wife Adele. When they move to London their paths cross with single mother Louise (Simona Brown) and secrets are made and uncovered.
While the show deals in all manner of dream and fantasy, it’s firmly set in reality, with location shooting in three distinct settings. Here are the highlights.
LONDON
Much of the shooting took place in and around Islington in North London. David and Adele’s impressive townhouse, in an undisclosed private residence, is contrasted with Louise’s flat. In fact, shooting for Louise’s home is in the desirable Aubert Court in Highbury, a mid-century development with distinctive semi-circular terraces that would make most Londoners very happy.
David and Louise first meet at Clerkenwell Grind on Old Street, EC1, a café and cocktail bar housed in a handsome former warehouse. Adele and Louise bump into each other outside Rewild florist on Hazellville Road, on the border of Crouch End, then have a coffee at Fink’s Salt and Sweet on Mountgrove Road – not quite round the corner, but still just about in the neighbourhood.
For Episode 2’s gym scenes, we’re back near Old Street at Ironmonger Row Baths, one of the capital’s oldest Turkish baths, while Londoners will spot familiar streets and landmarks throughout the series, from King Square Gardens in Islington to Holborn Police Station on Lamb’s Conduit Street.
SCOTLAND
The show’s most dramatic location is Adele’s family home in Scotland, seen in flashback scenes through the series. This is Ardkinglas House, a fantastical turreted mansion on the shores of Loch Fyne in Argyll. Built in 1907 to a design by architect Sir Robert Lorimer, a grandee of Gothic Revival, it’s a family home but is rented out for events and filming – previous shoots include movie The Water Horse and TV mini-series The Crow Road. As well as the arched entrance and the impressive crested fireplace, we see much of the grounds, which cover 4,800 hectares of woodlands and gardens.
BRIGHTON
Later in the series, David’s past in Brighton comes into focus and Louise takes a trip to the coast. We see her walking along the seafront and then visiting a café, filmed at Cosiez on Upper St James’s Street. While there, the production team took advantage of the Sussex countryside to film the panoramic helicopter sequence that closes the show – containing, of course, a final twist.
